When September Ends

Holy smokes! Is September gone?! Somebody has to wake me up! Since the beginning of August, I have been acquiring gear and working on a portfolio to set up my new career as videographer. It’s been a lot of work, but I’ve enjoyed it greatly. Granted, there have been times of doubt and worry, but that’s what happens when you start a new enterprise. Going from salary to unsteady income is a change in lifestyle. My family has been supportive and given some good advice. I just need to remember to not get so caught up in thinking about the future. Will I have enough clients to make this work? Am I going to have to get a second job to make ends meet? As long as I put in the necessary work and enjoy what I do, everything else will figure itself out.

As September comes to a close, I look at what I’ve accomplished thus far and what’s ahead.

  • created a business from scratch
  • designed a website
  • formulated pricing
  • gone through the legal channels (DBA, business bank account, business plan)
  • gave my business a loan to be payed back
  • had my first client (thanks, Katie!)
  • continued the work ethic I’ve always had (thanks mom and dad for instilling that in me)
  • started my days earlier by running with my girlfriend (thanks for pushing me)
  • used both the reminders and notes apps profusely (thanks, Apple)

I am grateful for each new client as they put their trust in my work. I hope it satisfies their needs. Every week, my goal is to create a short film in addition to filming real estate listings and helping with roof inspections. I’m excited to offer new services and build a portfolio for each. What I have to decide is if I use different platforms showcasing the various services. Some folks recommend one channel on YouTube per type of video work done, i.e real estate is one, weddings is one, short films is one. But for now, I’d like to keep it together under different playlists.

Currently, I have 15 active reminders, the majority being ideas for commercials. Soon, I’ll be putting those together. I know my business can benefit from one, but I hope to provide commercial filming and editing for local businesses near me. What I really enjoy with video is the creativity in shot types. I really hope to create stories with real estate listings so that they don’t become cookie cutter. In the end, I want to film short films, real estate, and commercials to make a living.

All I know is that I really enjoy what I do now. I’m not dreading going to work and I’m dedicated to making this endeavor work. Sorry to my couple of readers for the lapse in writing. Busy days fly by!
