Self-portrait

Hi, I’m Nick.

I’m a teacher, writer, filmmaker, and Civil War reenactor, which is either a very specific type of person or a very confused one. Probably both.

I started this blog because I believe the examined life is worth writing down. Not the polished, publishable version, but the actual one. The thoughts you have wandering around Rome at midnight, or standing in a field where something terrible happened a hundred and sixty years ago, or staring at a classroom of kids who are funnier and more perceptive than you expected.

That’s what you’ll find here: personal essays, travel writing, fiction, and the occasional dispatch from the front lines of public education. Written on Wednesdays. Sometimes messy. Always honest.

If you think deeply about ordinary things, you’ll feel at home.

Where you’ll find me:

  • Wandering around Europe for three months and nearly eating all the pizza (I tried).
  • Reenacting Civil War battles at Chickamauga, Antietam, and in the great State of Maine.
  • Writing anywhere from Maine to Europe — in my journal, on my laptop, and occasionally in notes apps at 1 a.m. — because I believe in capturing thoughts where they are.
  • Planning future trips a little closer to home until I can travel again.

Travel sparked a renewed passion for languages—I’m slowly working toward conversational fluency in French and Italian

What to expect:

I publish on Wednesdays. Posts are free. However, feel free to buy me a beer…ahem! I mean, coffee!
