New York has lost one member of its community: my brother (he’s moved, not dead). I’ve lost a free place to stay – although I’ll definitely be reaching out to his friends to fill in. In the past, I wrote about trips as a whole. For this last adventure visiting my brother, I’ll highlight the prominent spots. Each will receive their own post for easier referencing.
First up, if you’ve traveled to NYC and not eaten at Risbo, plan your next journey and include that restaurant now. Don’t miss out!
Risbo is a Flatbush Avenue, French-based restaurant in the geographic heart of Brooklyn. Warm lights that especially light up the night provide a welcoming atmosphere. There’s a hammock in the back, and leather beanbag-like chairs encircle tables outside. Modernistic stools contrast with the old brick walls. Only their clean whiteness provides a binding. Risbo offers a Parisian feel.

During my first visit in 2023, I ordered for my brother and me in French. This time, we encountered a different server, just as kind and conversational. Will and I asked for the Risbo Platter. I took it with lamb for an extra $4. Totally worth it! The lamb was tender and super savory.

The rest of the platter was valuable too. Hummus, plantain, spicy cabbage – but not too spicy – rice, and sauces. I would describe the platter as a wonderful assortment of flavors. Sweet and savory, hot and tangy. Much like a palette of paint, the platter offers various mixtures. I paired the lamb with hummus: savory and spicy. Lamb and sauce: savory and tangy. The rice offered respite from the heat, working well with any one of the spicy options. On its own, the platter is a wonderful choice for variety.

That’s not enough for me, though! Having enjoyed Risbo’s Mac ‘n Cheese before, I knew I had to have it again. This would be my death row meal: a huge bowl of Risbo Mac n’ Cheese. Laden heavily with five cheeses, the dish requires absolute attention. I spent several minutes with my eyes closed, ignoring all of my senses except taste. This may be the best Mac n’ Cheese. More testing is required.
Risbo’s is an essential New York visit. Consider it an after-work social hangout or preparation for a day of walking. But I caution you: the goodness may cause overeating. Bon appetite!
