Ode to Hostels

In recognition of the many enjoyable hostels I found during my European trip of Oct ’23 – Jan ’24. Friends were found everywhere. Whether I stayed a night or a week, they always provided. Provided entertainment, rest, and community. I’m excited about the next hostel visit!

Ode to Hostels

O shelter of the frugal traveler,
Explorer of cultures,
Discoverer of companions—

Shared rooms of bunk beds,
Busy kitchens feeding makeshift families,
Lounges where wanderers meet and stories spill.

A temporary shared home
Of mixed accents,
Luggage wheels, whispered goodbyes,
And the nightly chorus of snoring.

Here, strangers become friends,
Mates to the rave,
Partners to the pub,
Confidants over coffee at dawn.

You give me community,
Push me past comfort,
Staging point for adventures,
Resting place to dream and plan.

Not quite comfortable—
But always alive.
Even the 3AM drunkies
Can’t ruin your sanctuary.
