I’ve returned from my second expedition to Quebec City. My parents joined me on this trip as I filmed B-roll for my documentary on Mathieu d’Amours, a distant relative. I managed to capture quite a bit of content, but much more remains for a future visit.

We captured 57 shots during the one day of nice weather. The site of his home. Basilique de Notre-Dame. Montmorency Falls. Market Square. Chateau Frontenac. My lens choices (16-35mm, 50mm, 70-200mm) were solid and allowed flexibility. My parents were very helpful and offered to carry things throughout. I utilized a shot list that kept me focused and aware of what I needed.
My filming was haphazard and not well prepared. I forgot UV filters. I rushed filming because I wanted to spend time with my folks. It was their first visit to Quebec City. Capturing the Saint Lawrence and especially a ferry ride is important, since D’Amours arrived by boat. I also need to rework the script and memorize it so I can perform it at different sites in the city. I hope there are a few specks of gold in this batch of footage.
A lot of the issue is deciding when enough research has been done. There’s so much more to uncover, yet simplicity can be wonderful. Often, I remind myself that perfection is the enemy of completion. On my next trip, I’ll be more prepared with a memorized script and all my gear, ready to finish shooting the remaining B-roll and A-roll.
